Overview
Chicago has its own municipal fire feature rules governed by the Chicago Municipal Code and enforced by the Chicago Department of Buildings and Chicago Fire Department. Chicago's dense urban character means many residential properties cannot meet a 25-foot open fire setback — enclosed portable units and gas fire features are far more common. Chicago has limited wood-burning advisories through the IEPA during winter inversions, and the city has its own smoke ordinance that can affect wood-burning use. Permits for any permanent masonry structure require a City of Chicago building permit.
