Overview

Boulder has some of the most progressive environmental regulations in Colorado. The city falls within RAQC's Burn Wise program and additionally enforces its own stricter wood-burning and sustainability standards. Boulder's small lot sizes in established neighborhoods combined with the 25-foot recreational fire setback make open fire pits impractical in many yards. Gas fire features are far more common.

Building Permits

City of Boulder Planning & Development Services — 303-441-1880. Online at bouldercolorado.gov/planning-development. Boulder has a thorough permit review process and is known for detailed review of environmental compliance. Budget 2–4 weeks for accessory structure permits. Gas work requires a licensed plumber.

Burn Wise + Local Rules

Boulder participates in RAQC Burn Wise (raqc.org) AND has its own Wood Smoke Reduction Program that may add additional restrictions. Verify current Boulder-specific wood-burning rules with the Boulder Environmental Services division in addition to checking RAQC action levels.
